Shopify Theme Detector: see which theme and apps a store uses

Paste a store's address into this free Shopify theme detector (also used as a theme finder or theme checker) to see the theme it's built on, the name the store gave it, its version, its Theme Store ID and the apps we recognise. If the site is not Shopify, we name the platform when we can. Free, and no account needed.

What a result looks like

The theme behind the name

This store renamed its theme in admin. The public Shopify.theme record still says Symmetry: schema_name Symmetry, version 8.3.2, Theme Store ID 568.

What theme is that? Check any Shopify store

Seen a store you like and wondering what theme it's using? Shopify stores that use an Online Store theme print a small theme record in their page code. Our detector reads it for you, and you can also read it yourself.

  1. Copy the store's address

The home page works, and so does a product or collection page from the same store.

  2. Paste it in the box above and press Detect Theme

We load the public page, just as a visitor would, and read the store's Shopify.theme record.

  3. Read the result

Theme is what the store is built on (the theme's schema name, such as Dawn or Impulse). Name in store admin is the store's own label, often a date or the brand. A Theme Store ID means the copy came from the Shopify Theme Store (887 is Dawn). No ID means it was uploaded, bought elsewhere or built in-house.

Prefer to check by hand?

Open the store, press Ctrl+U (Cmd+Option+U on a Mac) to view the page source, then search for Shopify.theme. Read schema_name and schema_version, not name. Headless stores, built with Hydrogen or another custom front end, don't use an Online Store theme, so there's no record to read. Full steps: what theme is this website using? Want the apps too? Use the Shopify app detector.

How it works

  1. Enter a store URL

Use the home page or a product page and press Detect Theme. Your results open in a new tab and this tab continues to Shopify's free trial, as the note under the box says.

  2. We load the public page

Just as a browser would. We only see what any visitor can see, nothing from the store's admin.

  3. We check it's a Shopify store

Using signals such as the Shopify.theme object, files served from cdn.shopify.com and Shopify cookies. If they aren't there, we say the site doesn't appear to be built on Shopify.

  4. We read the store's theme record

The details Shopify puts in the page code, and we match the page's scripts against our list of known apps and tools.

A scan usually takes a few seconds. Each result has its own link (?url=), so you can share it or come back to it.

What you'll find out

  • Theme

The theme the store is built on, taken from the theme's own schema name, such as Dawn, Impulse or Symmetry.

  • Name in store admin

What the store calls its copy of the theme, shown when it differs from the theme name.

  • Publisher, price and version

When we know the theme, we show the publisher, Theme Store price, the version this store runs, and the latest listed version.

  • Theme Store ID

Shown when the store's copy reports one. Without an ID, we label it "Uploaded / custom or third-party".

  • Apps and tools

Apps and tracking tools we recognise in the public page code, such as Klaviyo, Judge.me, Gorgias or Yotpo.

  • Real-user speed

Core Web Vitals from Google's Chrome UX Report when field data exists for that origin (needs our API key to be set).

  • Platform (when not Shopify)

If the site is not a Shopify store, we say so and name the platform when we recognise it (for example WordPress, Wix or Squarespace).

Customised or renamed theme? How we find the original

Heavily customised Shopify stores often rename the theme in admin. That label is not the original theme. We read Shopify's own theme data in the public page code and report the base theme when it is still there.

We find the original theme behind a customised or renamed Shopify theme by reading the public Shopify.theme object. That record includes schema_name (the base theme), schema_version (the version) and theme_store_id (present when the copy came from the Shopify Theme Store). The store's admin label lives in name. Renaming the theme in Shopify admin changes name only.

When a developer has replaced schema_name with a brand or custom label, that record no longer names a Theme Store theme. We do not invent a base theme in that case.

How to read these results

A renamed Theme Store or uploaded theme still carries its real schema_name. Death Wish Coffee and Steve Madden both renamed their admin labels; both still report Dawn. Cole Buxton’s admin label is cole-buxton/live; schema_name is Horizon. Popflex renamed its copy again and still reports Symmetry with Theme Store ID 568.

No Theme Store ID means the copy was not installed straight from the Theme Store (uploaded file, another marketplace, or an older copy). The base theme in schema_name is still what to look up.

A brand or custom schema_name (for example a store whose schema name is just its own brand) means the page no longer names a known base theme. We should not present that label as if it were Dawn, Impulse or another Theme Store theme.

A headless store (hydrogen.shop) runs on Shopify with a custom front end instead of an Online Store theme, so there is no theme record to read.

The Dawn demo store is at theme-dawn-demo.myshopify.com. Want to dig deeper by hand? See how to identify a renamed Shopify theme or find a Shopify theme in the page source.

Shopify Theme Store IDs, explained

Every Shopify store that uses an Online Store theme has a small Shopify.theme record in its page code. Here's what each part means, and why the Theme Store ID is the most useful clue.

Fields in the Shopify.theme record, with values from a live scan of popflexactive.com.
FieldExampleWhat it tells you
nameNew Design 2026…The store's own label for its copy. Often a date, a season or the brand. Don't search the Theme Store for it.
schema_nameSymmetryThe theme the copy is built on. This is what we show as the theme.
schema_version8.3.2The version of that theme the store runs.
theme_store_id568The theme's Theme Store number. Empty (null) when the copy didn't come from the Theme Store.
idA long numberThis store's copy of the theme. It's different in every store, so it won't help you find the theme.
rolemain"main" is the published theme shoppers see. We only see that one, not unpublished drafts.

Theme Store IDs for popular themes

A Theme Store ID is the same in every store that installed that theme from the Theme Store, so it identifies the theme even when the name has been changed. A few you'll see often:

Checked on themes.shopify.com on 23 October 2026.
Theme Store IDTheme
887Dawn
857Impulse
855Prestige
568Symmetry

No ID doesn't mean the theme is fake or pirated. A developer may have uploaded the theme as a file, and themes sold outside the Theme Store never have one. It only tells you the copy wasn't installed straight from the Theme Store.

What a theme detector can't see

A detector reads the public page, the same code your browser gets. That's enough to name the theme in most cases, but some things stay out of view.

  • Headless stores. Stores built with Hydrogen or another custom front end don't use an Online Store theme, so there's no theme to name. We say when a store looks headless.
  • Custom or brand schema names. If a developer replaces schema_name with a brand label, the page no longer names a Theme Store theme. We must not treat that label as the original theme.
  • Code changes. Two stores on the same version of Dawn can look completely different. The version number doesn't tell you what a developer has edited.
  • Where a theme was bought. Without a Theme Store ID, the page doesn't say whether the theme came from another marketplace, an agency or a developer's own files.
  • Unpublished themes. We only see the published theme, not drafts a store is testing in its admin.
  • Back-office apps. Apps for stock, tax, accounting or shipping labels don't put code on the storefront, so no detector can see them. Use the Shopify app detector for the apps that do.
  • Stores that block scanners. Some stores refuse automated visits. We tell you when that happens instead of guessing.

Most detected Shopify themes on this tool

A dated snapshot from our scan log. Counts only: we do not publish which stores were scanned.

From 23 October to 6 November 2026 we logged hundreds of Shopify scans. Dawn, Horizon, Impulse, Prestige and Symmetry show up most often. See the full table: most detected Shopify themes (November 2026).

That page is based on what people paste into this Shopify theme finder, not a census of every Shopify store.

Shopify theme detector FAQs

Is the Shopify theme detector free?

Yes. It's free and you don't need an account. If you start a Shopify store through our link, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

How do I find out what theme a Shopify store is using?

Paste the store's address into the box at the top of this page and press Detect Theme. We show the theme it's built on, the name the store gave it, its version and its Theme Store ID. To check by hand, view the page source and search for Shopify.theme.

Can it identify a renamed Shopify theme?

Yes, in most cases. We read the store's Shopify.theme record. Renaming a theme in the Shopify admin changes name, not schema_name or theme_store_id. Checked 6 November 2026 (Europe/London): deathwishcoffee.com → Dawn 10.0.0 (admin label deathwish-shopify-20/production); stevemadden.com → Dawn 13.0.0 (monorepo-ecom/SM - Production); colebuxton.com → Horizon 2.0.3 (cole-buxton/live); popflexactive.com → Symmetry 8.3.2, Theme Store ID 568. If a developer has also replaced schema_name with a brand label, we cannot confirm the original theme from that record alone.

Why does the detector show a different name from the store's theme?

Because Shopify stores keep two names. name is the store's own label in admin (often a date, season or brand). schema_name is the original/base theme the copy was built on. We show the base theme as Theme, and the admin label as Name in store admin when they differ. That is how we find the original theme behind a customised or renamed Shopify theme.

Customised or renamed theme? How do you find the original?

We read the public Shopify.theme object in the page code: schema_name for the base theme, schema_version for the version, and theme_store_id when the copy came from the Shopify Theme Store. Renaming a theme in admin changes name only, so the base theme is usually still there. We do not invent a base theme when schema_name itself is a custom or brand label.

What is a Shopify Theme Store ID?

It's the number Shopify gives each theme in its Theme Store, and it's the same in every store that installed that theme from there. For example, 887 is Dawn, 857 is Impulse, 568 is Symmetry and 855 is Prestige. It isn't the same as the id field in the page code, which belongs to one store's copy of the theme.

What does "Uploaded / custom or third-party" mean?

It means the store's copy of the theme doesn't report a Shopify Theme Store ID. It may be a custom build, a theme from another marketplace, or a Theme Store theme added as a file. For example, deathwishcoffee.com shows Dawn 10.0.0 and lskd.co shows Impulse 7.3.1, both with no ID.

Can a store hide its Shopify theme?

Not entirely, if it uses an Online Store theme, because the theme record is part of the page code. A store can rename its copy, and a developer can change the theme's schema name, which is why some results show a custom name such as "allbirds-theme". Headless stores built with Hydrogen or another custom front end don't use an Online Store theme, so there's no record to read.

Which Shopify apps can it detect?

The apps and tools on our recognition list (about 40), such as Klaviyo, Judge.me, Gorgias, Yotpo, Swym Wishlist Plus and Microsoft Clarity, when they load recognisable code on the page we scan. Apps that only work in the back office leave no trace on the storefront, so the list is never complete. See the full list on the Shopify app detector.

How up to date are the results?

We keep each result for up to six hours, or five minutes if the scan failed. If a store changed its theme in the last few hours, the old answer may still show.

Why did my scan fail?

Some stores block automated requests. When that happens we say so (for example, "blocked our scanner (HTTP 429)") rather than guess. Try again later, or paste a product page URL.

Does it work on WordPress sites?

For a full WordPress theme or plugin read-out, use our WordPress theme detector or WordPress plugin detector. If you paste a non-Shopify URL into the box above, we still tell you it is not Shopify and name the platform when we recognise it.

Which themes show up most in your scanner?

We publish a dated table of most detected Shopify themes from our scan log (counts only, no store list). It is a snapshot of what people check here, not Shopify market share.
