How to Find Out What Shopify Theme a Website Is Using (2025 Guide)

🧠 What Shopify Theme Is This?

You’ve just seen a Shopify store that stops you in your scroll.

Maybe it’s the layout.
Maybe it’s how smooth the product page feels.
Maybe it’s something you can’t even name — but you know this: you want your site to feel like that.

So now you’re wondering is there a Shopify Theme Detector:
“What Shopify theme is this store using?”

I’ve been building Shopify sites for years — both from scratch and off-the-shelf. I’ve been through the era of Debut, the rise of Dawn, the flood of Impulse clones. If you’re trying to figure out what theme a store is running, here’s how to do it — fast.

⚡ Option 1: Use a Shopify Theme Detector (The Fast Way)

Let’s not overthink it.
If you want the answer right now, there’s a tool for that:

👉 Shopify Theme Detector – WhatThemeDetector.com

Paste in the store’s URL and hit scan.
You’ll get back:

  • The theme name (if it’s visible)
  • An educated guess at the base theme (Dawn, Prestige, etc.)
  • A few Shopify apps the store is using

It’s free. No signup. Just clean info, fast.
And yes — we built it. Because I needed this tool myself.

🔎 Option 2: Check the Source Code (If You’re a Bit Curious)

Want to peek under the hood manually? Here’s how you can tell what Shopify theme a store uses without any tools:

  1. Go to the store’s homepage
  2. Right-click → View Page Source
  3. Use CTRL+F (or Cmd+F) and search for: CopyEditShopify.theme

You’ll often see something like this:

jsCopyEditShopify.theme = {
  name: "Impulse",
  id: 12938475,
  role: "main"
}

That “name” field tells you what the theme is called inside Shopify. Sometimes it’s helpful. Sometimes it just says “Custom Theme.” Which… isn’t.

That’s where detectors like ours help — we go beyond what’s printed in the code and look for clues in the store structure, file names, and layout patterns.

🤔 What If the Theme Has Been Renamed?

Happens all the time.
A store buys a premium theme (let’s say Prestige) — then renames it to “Brand2025” or “LiveTheme.” The name changes, but the bones are the same.

Our tool at WhatThemeDetector.com can still identify the underlying theme. We’ve mapped out dozens of premium themes — like Impulse, Dawn, Showcase, Broadcast, and more — so we can still make a smart match even if the name’s been changed.

🧩 Recognising Themes by “Feel” (Once You Know, You Know)

After years of working with Shopify stores, I can often guess a theme just from the first scroll.

Some of the telltale signs:

  • Dawn – Clean, blocky, minimal. Often the first theme anyone uses (because it’s free).
  • Impulse – Feels like a luxury fashion site. Banners. Collection filters. Always sharp.
  • Prestige – Big whitespace. Fancy fonts. Great for high-end brands.
  • Showcase – Visual storytelling. Big images. Often used for artisanal or high-concept brands.

This is the kind of pattern recognition that comes with time — but honestly, using a detector will shortcut 95% of it.

It is worth mentioning that some sites can be completely made from scratch. Kylie Cosmetics is a good example. With millions put into the company, they probably have their own squad of developers building and maintaining the site.

💭 Why Knowing the Theme Matters

People ask me why this even matters. Here’s the thing:

  • If you’re starting a store, seeing what others use helps shortcut your research.
  • If you’re working with a designer, knowing the base theme saves you hours (and budget).
  • If you’re competing with someone in your niche, you’ll learn how they built trust.

And if you’re building sites for clients, knowing what theme a store is using helps you price, scope, and plan smarter.

🛒 Can I Just Copy the Same Theme?

Yes — and no.

You can absolutely buy the same theme. Shopify’s Theme Store and premium developers like Out of the Sandbox or Archetype sell many of the themes you’ll see in the wild.

But even with the same theme, customisation is everything. Fonts, layout tweaks, call-to-action tone, image hierarchy — that’s what turns a template into a brand.

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel.
You just need to put your own hubcaps on it.
